Easter Island

At 3,687 kilometers from the coast of Chile, isolated in the middle of the Pacific is Rapa Nui. Geologically young and volcanic, this island was only populated since the fifth century.

Nevertheless, its history is fascinating and intriguing, showing us on just 164 km2 of surface, how the humanity behaves in the same way: the history of the world in an island.

Being there and approaching these iconic Moais in person is just the beginning; soon you will assimilate the religious paradigm that inspired them and the ostentation that made them increasingly big, leading the Rapa Nuis to a critical conflict that made them change their beliefs, but leaving a unique legacy in the world.

It is a process that leaves a strong impression on the visitor, if the visitor really listens.

"My God" is the expression that comes to mind when we listen to anecdotes and the history of the island. Since its beginnings by the isolation of the territory, until recently, at the end of the 19th century when only 101 Indians were crushed by triumphant colonization.

Nowadays, the Rapa Nuis are probably the most lively, joyful and welcoming native ethnic group and indigenous culture in the country. They have been able to overcome the sorrows of their ancestors with dances, festivals, tournaments and Polynesian traditions that welcome the visitor.

However, there are still conflicts with the government, and love and dislike with the Chileans who live there.

We recommend at least 3 full days, but even better if it is 4.

Since its colonization, the island has been modifying its customs and rites to elect its leaders. In this most recent epoch of their civilization, the ritual to deliver the power was an annual competition that consisted of obtaining the first egg of the season of the shadow tern (manu tara) in the islet of Motu Nui ('great island'), swimming back to Rapa Nui and climbing the marine cliff of Rano Kau until its summit near the town of Orongo. This spring ceremony honored the creator god Make-Make and culminated with the triumphant investiture of the tangata manu, the sacred bird-man of Rapa Nui.
